On June 19, Xu Ningsheng, President of Sun Yat-sen University, held a meeting with the media to talk about this year’s undergraduate admission and education in SYSU.

According to Xu Ningsheng, SYSU’s number of undergraduate admissions this year levels with last year. SYSU plans to enroll 7,730 students from mainland China and 320 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The number of enrollment in Guangdong province is expected to reach nearly 4,000, including students recommended for admission, students passing the independent recruitment exam (including students excelling in subject competitions, and rural students from poor areas), art-talented students and high-level athletes.

A highlight of this year’s enrollment is that the School of Advanced Computing at SYSU starts to enroll undergraduate students. Xu Ningsheng said that relying on the world’s fastest supercomputer “Tianhe-2”, SYSU established the first supercomputing school in China in 2013, with the aim to meet the national major strategic demand of developing supercomputing and foster urgently-needed talents in this field.

In talking about the undergraduate program of the School of Advanced Computing, Xu Ningsheng revealed that taking into consideration of the interdisciplinary nature of supercomputing, the students will be asked to select a direction before their third academic year. They can continue to study computer science and supercomputing to become research and professional talents in supercomputing; they can also choose to study interdisciplinary courses in life sciences, chemistry, environment, materials, etc, to become applied talents in supercomputing with comprehensive knowledge. There is a broad prospect for the students’ future development.
