Recently, led by the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, a panel of orthopedics experts successfully conducted an artificial lumbar disc replacement surgery under Celioscope, the first of its kind in the world. Proposed by the research team led by renowned orthopedist Liiu Shangli, the surgery was completed through collaboration between the Orthopedics Department and the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery.

According to sources, the first artificial lumbar disc replacement surgery in Asia was conducted by Professor Liu Shangli in 1998 when the first batch of domestically made artificial lumbar disc approved for clinical trial was successfully developed. The research team has since then been committed to the basic and clinical research of the artificial lumbar disc replacement and obtained financial support from various programs. The traditional replacement surgery requires 10-20 cm incision to allow a better (visual) field and has shortcomings such as prolong surgery, more bleeding and patients’ slow recovery from truma. The application of laparoscopic technology in the surgery makes up for the aforementioned shortcomings.
